Facts About the Grotto at Holy Angels Church:
The grotto is crowned with a magnificent cross, crafted out of reclaimed Western Red Cedar telephone poles by Ray and Carol Bergeron. Embedded in the heart of the cross is a stone fragment from St. Peter’s Square in Rome. The solid concrete statue of Our Lady of Fatima was the backyard family grotto of the Mirabelli Family in Thunder Bay, which was generously donated to our grotto by Anita Mirabelli in loving memory of husband, Joe Mirabelli. The altar is surfaced with marble slabs donated by the Diocese of Thunder Bay – St. Andrew’s Cemetery. The altar stone is believed to be from the second Holy Angels Church (completed in 1910). Embedded within the mensa (altar table-top) under the altar stone is soil from Bethlehem. Stones from family homes throughout Schreiber, Terrace Bay, and North Shore communities help form the grotto. Buried within the walls are broken and unused sacramentals from parishioners such as rosaries, scapulars, and holy medals. The grotto also contains stone fragments and soil from locations worldwide, including: almost every province of Canada; Gaspe, Quebec; Ituna and Rosthern, Saskatchewan; St. Elias Church in Brampton, Ontario; South Gillies, Ontario; an archaic indigenous settlement; Garabandal (Spain); Lourdes (France); Siderno (Italy); Ternopil (Ukraine); Notre Dame (Paris); Mt. Sinai (Egypt), The Coliseum and Catacombs (Rome); Fatima (Portugal); and Lichen and Czestochowa (Poland). |
